Kildonan road repair work out to tender
Plans to repair and reopen the C147 at the south end of Arran are moving up a gear.
The embankment supporting the road at Auchenhew Wood, near Kildonan, was badly damaged by flood water in September last year and the road had to be closed for safety reasons.
Following a comprehensive investigation and complex design process, a tender for the repair works is now under way.
It is hoped that work to address the landslip and carry out repairs can begin on site in mid-May with the aim of having the road reopened by the end of June, just before the school holiday period begins.
David Hammond, head of commercial services at North Ayrshire Council, said: ‘We understand this closure is inconvenient and has been ongoing since last year. However, it’s important that repairs are carried out safely and that’s why a comprehensive investigation had to be undertaken first.
‘The proposed work will include improvements to the drainage locally as part of our efforts to prevent a recurrence of the damage.
‘We are mindful of the ongoing pandemic and the restrictions that remain in place. The safety of those involved in reopening the roadworks, as well as those who live on the island, will be absolutely paramount.
‘There will undoubtedly be a requirement for travel and access to the island and this will be factored into the construction programme.’
