Glencloy event sees trilogy of events up and running

-

The Brodick to Glencloy race went ahead last weekend with an international complement of runners taking part in the 10k event.

Organised by Arran Runners, which hosts four running events on Arran throughout the year, the event was the first of three new races which will also include the Lamlash Forest Trail later this month and the Whiting Bay Forest Trail in October.

Owing to ferry disruption, and the challenges of Covid, 35 runners out of an expected 57 set off at 2.30pm on Sunday. They enjoyed a spectacular and fast race starting from the old Post Office garage in Auchrannie Road, running a clockwise trail through forest track around the Mayish and the Fairy Glen before returning to the start via Glencloy.

An Arran Runners spokesperson said: ‘Competitors from England, New Zealand, Poland, Germany, Italy, Romania and Lamlash enjoyed a good Arran welcome and the race was well supported by the Arran community, both as spectators and as competitors. ‘Special thanks to those who acted as stewards for the event, ABC Arran Training which provided first aid cover and to Ernest Ribbeck who kindly allowed us to use his car park.’

The race was won by Jennifer Wetton of Arran Runners in a time of 38 minutes and 49 seconds, just beating Matt Reedy of Ambleside AC in 39 minutes and 24 seconds.

The event was organised with permission from Scottish Athletics and Forestry Scotland and complied with Covid regulations issued by Scottish Athletics.

The full results of the race have been posted on the Arran Runners website at arranrunners.weebly.com.

The next two races will be the Lamlash Forest Trail on Sunday August 29 and the Whiting Bay Forest Trail which will take place on Sunday October 3. Anyone wishing to enter should visit the sientries.co.uk website.
