Volunteers rally to call to help expand school playground
More than 25 parents, teachers and volunteers answered a plea from Brodick Primary School to assist with clearing a rocky patch of land next to the school which it is planned to reclaim for an outdoor learning space.
The volunteers arrived armed with rakes and wheelbarrows and after just an hour the land was cleared of rocks and raked level, ready to be covered with topsoil and planted with grass.
Head teacher Shirley MacLachlan and principal teacher Claire Mooney have had plans to utilise the area but quotes to restore the land have been prohibitively expensive.
With the assistance of depute head teacher Jane Boyle and all of the volunteers who rolled up their sleeves, the first steps towards creating a new outdoor learning area for the pupils has now been realised.
Next, the area will be seeded, and once the grass has started to grow, it will be used as an outdoor space for learning and leisure activities, rather than an overgrown and unsightly area at the back of the school where children could not venture.
Ms Mooney said: ‘From all the staff and children at Brodick Primary School we would like to thank the parents, children and local volunteers who took the time to come and help us in our garden at the school.
‘We could not have carried out this massive job without you all.

Once the area is able to be used and the grass has taken root, there are further plans to develop the area and volunteers may be called upon to help make this happen.
