Air support called in to help with trio of island rescues

A hillwalker had to be airlifted to hospital on Monday after he fell while walking along the coast of north Arran.

The Arran Mountain Rescue Team (AMRT) were called out at 12.50pm to assist a male walker who had taken a fall at Millstone Point and sustained a face injury and a possible broken arm. He was treated by the team doctor and paramedic, given pain relief and packaged in a stretcher for onward transportation to hospital by the HM Coastguard Rescue 199 helicopter.

It was the third call 0ut for the team in less than a week after two incidents last Wednesday which also required rapid medical evacuations by helicopter.

AMRT members were called out at 3.30pm to locate and treat an injured mountain biker in the Clauchland hills area. Team members located the casualty quickly and due to the seriousness of his injuries, Rescue 199 was tasked to uplift him to hospital.

As this job was nearing completion, the team was then alerted to another incident on Goatfell where a male hill walker had sustained a hip injury. Team members made their way back to base then on to Goatfell where the casualty was treated and then airlifted to hospital by air ambulance.

A spokesperson from AMRT said: ‘Many thanks to Rescue 199, Air Ambulance and our local coastguard team for their assistance.’
