John helps Scots to golfing victory over ‘auld enemy’

-

Representing Scotland as part of a 14-man team, Arran golfer John Pennycott has helped to secure a 14 - 10 victory over England at the Phoenix Cup International.

The Phoenix Cup is usually played between disabled golfers from Europe and the USA but travel restrictions have seen the international format altered this year and in 2020.

This year's event, organised by Scottish Disability Golf and Curling (SDGC), took place over three days at Elmwood Golf Course in Cupar and is the disabled version of the Ryder/Solheim Cup.

John is familiar with the tournament, having being part of the winning team last year and having been selected as captain for the 2019 tournament which he unfortunately missed owing to hernia surgery a few weeks before the event.

In fact, John almost never featured in the tournament as he had not managed to play in many of the Scottish disabled competitions this year owing to Covid and ferry issues.

This meant he didn't qualify for the team, however, thanks to a late call-off he got asked to join the team a few days before the event. John, who said he thoroughly enjoyed joining up with some old friends and making new friends during the week, helped to secure the team's victory by winning two of his three games which included foursomes on day one, fourballs on day two and singles on the last day.
