North Ayrshire Council officials have confirmed £880,000 will be spent on the Arran roads programme for 2023/2024.

The Arran works are part of an almost £6million allocation to maintain and improve roads across North Ayrshire with a further £1m assigned for street lighting and a similar amount for bridges and retaining walls.

The sum of £880,000 is comprised of £500,000 for carriageway resurfacing, £200,000 for carriageway surface dressing and £180,000 for structure projects.

Carriageway resurfacing costs will include work at Lamlash, Benlister Road from Park Terrace to road end; Golf Course Road, Blackwaterfoot, Queenscliff to car park; B880 String Road, various locations; A841, three sections between Brodick and Sannox and patching works at Ballerie Bridge towards Sannox.

Surface dressing costs include the A841, at Brodick junction B880 to slipway past Shore Lodge and Strathwillan Road junction to Glenisle Hotel, Lamlash.

Structure projects include retaining wall strengthening at the culvert west of Ballymeanoch and temporary strengthening and scour repairs at Dougarie and Catacol bridges.

Councillors rubber-stamped the proposals which were put to them in a report which outlined how a “robust data-driven maintenance system is in place to ensure that the council gives priority to areas of roads most in need of work” which “ensures the council is providing value for money on any investment attributed to road maintenance.”

Councillor Tony Gurney, cabinet member for place, said: “The condition of roads always generates a lot of debate because it affects most of us in some way or another. “This report provides some context about why decisions are made and how we manage our resources most effectively to provide the best possible service.

“We are regularly audited to ensure the systems we have are robust and stand up to scrutiny.

“We will also provide regular updates on our website when we know when works will be carried out. So please check the site if you are looking for further, more specific information.”
