Welcome return of Arran’s football league

- Danny Head

The Arran football league is making a comeback after a couple of years in the doldrums as a result of Covid and other issues, but with a reduced number of teams.

Current league winners Southend will be joined by Lamlash and a team made up of players from the previous three teams in the league.

So far known as Brodick, as that’s where majority of their players come from and where they will play home games, the third team will be joined by a handful of Shiskine and Northend boys to make up its squad.

Both cup competitions will be different as a result of only having three teams.

The Arran Haulage Cup and the Copperwheats Knockout Cup, at the tail end of the season, will be played in a round robin format with the two teams with the most points playing each other in the final.

In the Arran Dairies League, there will be nine fixtures throughout the summer.

The team with the most points will be crowned champions.

After a successful annual general meeting, it was agreed there would be changes on the pitch. Any player given a yellow or red card will be fined £5/£10 with the money going to the league to help pay for new equipment.

The games have been moved to Friday nights or Saturday afternoons to hopefully get more people watching, rather than the previous few seasons which saw games played on a Monday night.

All three teams have started training. If you are interested in playing for a team contact Babbies MacNeil for Brodick, Sean Higgins for Lamlash or Danny Head for Southend via the Isle of Arran

Football Association Facebook page.

The season starts with the Arran Haulage Cup and a home game for Brodick against Lamlash on Saturday April 22, with the league starting at the end of May.

Three teams is not an ideal number but we are glad to get something going this season and hopefully if we have enough interest we can expand things next year.
