Free compost on offer across North Ayrshire

-

Residents, growers and gardeners are invited to take advantage of a free compost boost as part of North Ayrshire Council’s big compost giveaway next week.

The eco initiative from North Ayrshire Council’s waste services team will help give gardens and allotments across the region a healthy boost.

Around 70 tonnes of loose compost will be available at the big compost giveaway for residents to collect next week, from noon each day, at locations throughout North Ayrshire.

On Arran, residents can collect the compost at the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Market Road, Brodick, on Wednesday June 7.

The compost comes from food and garden waste, which is collected within North Ayrshire each year. Last year alone, this was almost 12,300 tonnes.

Cabinet member for economy and climate change Councillor Tony Gurney said: “As part of our climate change and sustainability strategy, our compost giveaways are a brilliant opportunity for community groups and individuals to reap the rewards of recycling. Better yet, they allow residents to see first-hand just how beneficial recycling can be. I would encourage anyone in North Ayrshire who could make use of the compost to head along and get their share.

“Come along early to avoid missing out. The compost will be loose, so please bring a bag and shovel with you. Pop along from noon on the day.”

A waste services team spokesperson said: “Remember, if you put the wrong stuff in the wrong bin we can’t collect it. The most common items mistakenly placed in the brown bins are animal bedding, pet waste, food packaging and plastic bags. Please also don’t place wood, turf or soil in your brown bin. These waste items should be taken to your nearest household waste recycling centre. For more recycling information including recycling centres, how to reduce what you put in your bins and a refresher on the Right Stuff, Right Bin guidance, visit the dedicated council webpage at https://tinyurl.com/recycleNA.

“The council thanks everyone who is recycling week in, week out. By doing so, you are helping us to reach our ambition of becoming a carbon free, net zero local authority by 2030.”

On the mainland, brown bins are used for organic waste from the garden and food waste from the home, however, on Arran residents use a black bin for general waste and a blue bin for recycling. Items outwith these categories should be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Brodick.

Compost supplies are limited and will be offered on a firstcome, first-served basis.
