New support group for island carers

-

A new support group has been set up to provide a space for carers on Arran to connect, share experiences and learn about available resources.

The Arran Carers Group is facilitated by Carers Gateway North Ayrshire, an organisation that provides information and advice to unpaid carers across the region.

Members had their first meeting at Banner Lodge in Brodick at the end of April, which saw 17 people from across the island attend.

Sheena Morrison, a family worker with Carers Gateway North Ayrshire, led an informative session for attendees when she explained the services available.

She said: “I was delighted to see such a great turnout for our first meeting. Carers on Arran often feel isolated, so having a dedicated group where they can build a supportive community is invaluable. I look forward to working closely with those on the island.”

The meeting was helpful for many attendees, including one carer from Lamlash, who cares for her elderly mother.

She said: “As a full-time carer, it can be easy to become overwhelmed, but being around others who understand the unique challenges was incredibly uplifting. I’m grateful this group now exists on Arran.”

Another carer echoed that sentiment, adding: “Before today, I didn’t realise just how many resources are available to us through Carers Gateway. I’m excited to take advantage of their services and be part of this supportive network of Arran carers.”

The Arran Carers group plans to meet monthly at Banner Lodge, with the next meeting scheduled for Thursday May 23.

All carers from Arran are welcome to join the meetings. For more information, contact Sheena Morrison at sheena. morrison@unity-enterprise.com.
