Royal Society of PORTRAIT PAINTERS
The Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ annual exhibition takes place at the Mall Galleries in London, from May 6 to 15. For the past months, the society has been receiving entries from artists over the age of 18 from the UK and internationally and a selection of these will be displayed alongside members’ work. Numerous prizes and awards are offered and this year there will be a new £20,000 William Lock Portrait Prize awarded to the most ‘timeless portrait with great feeling for paint and its aesthetic potential’. Other prizes include the £10,000 Ondaatje Prize for Portraiture and The Prince of Wales ‘s Award for Portrait Drawing.
‘The selection of work on display,’ the organisers say, ‘makes it the perfect destination for those wishing to commission a portrait. The individuals portrayed span every age and every field of human activity. Portraiture is a fascinating barometer of current trends and holds a mirror up to nature in reflecting life in contemporary Britain.’This year, that reflection is more important than ever.
