I took a closer look at the volume and contour of the shell and was more conscious of using directional brushstrokes to better describe its roundness and curves. While doing this, I was observing the smaller shifts of tone and temperature over the surface and began to apply the paint more thickly than before. The darks on the wall were accented to create greater space between it and the subject. Smaller flecks of paint were added across the front edge of the shell, picking out the lights and texture of its rhythmic edge
