The Artist

Valuable lessons

-

I read with interest John Austin’s letter regarding perspective and the fact it is no longer taught in art schools ( The Artist, June 2021 issue). I too was taught perspective whilst a student at Glasgow School of Art and went on to teach art and design.

As students, we were also taught anatomy. Our tutor was an eminent artist (William Drummond Bone). He had in his studio a skeleton and, once a week, it would be produced and we would be taught about bones and the origins and insertions of muscles. We even had a written exam on anatomy. This understanding proved invaluable when we proceeded to draw and paint the human form. This, with perspective, seems to have been dropped from the curriculum in most art schools, which I feel is a great pity.
