The buildings were painted with mixtures of burnt sienna and cobalt blue. The darkest part of the workshop interior was painted with French ultramarin­e and light red. The hulls of the barges were painted with French ultramarin­e and burnt umber, using some raw sienna for the lighter hull on the left. Before the paint was dry, the darker bits were enhanced with more paint and texture created, creating a tonal difference between the barges and the buildings behind. The three dark windows against the white unpainted cabin wall serve as the visual centre of focus. The central hull was painted in a single wash from dark to light and, whilst still wet, the darkest part received a strong mixture of the same colour to enhance the tone and add texture (note the visible brushstrok­es). I then positioned the dark window panes accurately before rendering the decks loosely
