FINISHED PAINTING
Barges at the Boatyard, Pinmill, watercolour, 12318in (30.5346cm). The incoming tide provided shallow rippled water and presented just the right tone, with few reflections. Painting it was a cinch. A light wash of cobalt blue with some burnt sienna sufficed. The figures provided interest, a sense of scale and a visual counterbalance for the barges. They were positioned so that the green band of reed next to the hard led to them and, in turn, they reflect the eye towards the barges
