Derwent’s Tinted Charcoal Paint Pan Set comprises the brand’s uniquely watersoluble Tinted Charcoal paints that add just a hint of colour to the charcoal base. As Derwent say, this very special set is perfect for experienced artists and those who are learning and experimenting with art.
We all know that charcoal can be a messy medium with which to work so Derwent made it their mission to develop a unique formula to allow the artist to enjoy the inimitable quality of charcoal art with just a hint of colour, while retaining a high level of creative control.
We asked Derwent what makes their Tinted Charcoal paints so unique? The answer lies in the formula, which is water-soluble, allowing each colour to blend and layer when wet. The versatile, highly creative medium can also be quickly and easily mixed, lifted, smudged and drawn over when dry, creating atmospheric and expressive results. The artist doesn’t, however, lose that much-loved matte, textured finish. Derwent point out that there are no similar paint products on the market.
The deep and muted tones in this paint set are ideal for creating expressive and moody landscape and urban art.
The compact, self-contained set contains 12 Tinted Charcoal paint pans, five mixing palettes and a sponge to clean the mini waterbrush which is included.
Other Derwent products that can be used with the Tinted Charcoal Paint Pan Set include their Inktense paper, Push Button Waterbrushes and Kneadable Eraser.
A modernising product
Derwent sought feedback about their new paint sets from artist focus groups, with encouraging results. Some respondents even described the set as taking charcoal to the next level, with the medium encouraging a more complex way of thinking about art.
Derwent chose to work with Robert Dutton, regular contributor to The Artist, for their packaging artwork. As readers know, Robert is a highly accomplished artist with an expressive and contemporary style. His artwork is always atmospheric and dramatic and as a well-versed Derwent ambassador, this was another perfect fit. Derwent were keen to develop an illustration to demonstrate the moody and dramatic effects that can be achieved with the Tinted Charcoal set. The company is delighted with the results and the final packaging illustration.
“Derwent have done it again - created another fantastic and versatile art medium! In the past the only available charcoal for artists to use to express their ideas was black. Not anymore! The twelve subtle water-soluble Tinted Charcoal colours are unique in tone, colour and consistency. Presented in a handy pan set, each colour quickly and easily mixes so you can create all sorts of expressive, moody and dramatic subjects, quickly, at different sizes in a really engaging and fluid way. I personally love the way each subtle colour has a unique, natural granular texture to them when dry, creating expressive landscapes and seascapes. The paint pans last a long time and gorgeous tints and further colours are created when the rich, lightfast pigments are colour washed over one another. Once dry they can be drawn over and combined with other Derwent media in all sorts of exciting new ways, or easily lifted and manipulated when dry. A really exciting medium and one I welcome into my studio to be used time and time again, either on its own or with other drawing and painting media. What a great set to elevate my work to an altogether new level!” Robert Dutton
