I mixed a black from Prussian blue and red brown, which I varied from warm to cool, and added the bold markings on the lapwings and avocets, quickly bleeding it into a mix of French ultramarine and yellow ochre to form the dark green upperparts of the lapwings. The more subtle plumage details of the dunlin and knot were added with a mix of French ultramarine and burnt sienna mix, trying not to get too bogged down in detail.
