PRACTISE YOUR COLOUR MIXING
Working from this photograph, begin by identifying the colour category first, then decide if you are looking at a saturated or toned colour. You can do this by offering a swatch of the saturated colour against your reference. Keep your painting small and manageable and work on an appropriate surface such as gessoed board, canvas, or oil-primed paper. Use a variety of flat brush sizes from 3 to 8. My recommended palette of colours for this painting is sap green, French ultramarine, burnt sienna, cadmium yellow pale, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, and titanium white. Begin the painting by diluting the colour a little with Zest-it (much better alternative to turpentine), then build up the painting with neat paint
We’d love to see your paintings – we’ll share them on PaintersOnline and Paul will select one to comment on. Email a good-quality photograph of your work, with a brief description of how you achieved it, to dawn@tapc.co.uk with ‘Better Painting Series, Colour Mixing’ in the subject line, by August 6, 2021.
