EXERCISE
PRACTISE PAINTING VALUES IN ACRYLIC
Working from the photograph, begin by using the paint in a watercolour method to create light, translucent values, then create the mid and dark values using opaque colour to create solidity. Use a good quality watercolour paper, such as Canson Moulin du Roy and a few short bright brushes, sizes 10, 12 and 14, ideally of a sable/synthetic blend. Keep the painting size manageable (no bigger than 11315in). I recommend using cerulean blue, cobalt blue, yellow ochre, French ultramarine, burnt sienna, sap green and titanium white.
Tip: Use a spray bottle and gently mist your painting as you work to prevent fast drying.
We’d love to see your paintings – we’ll share them on PaintersOnline and Paul will select one to comment on. Email a good-quality photograph of your work, with a brief description of how you achieved it, to dawn@tapc.co.uk with ‘Better Painting Series, Values’ in the subject line, by September 3, 2021.
