Use nature’s art supplies

Ann Blockley has discovered that connecting with nature in woodlands or close to trees helps creativity and to release creative blocks. As part of this process she makes natural inks and incorporates natural materials in her work

We live in a fast-paced world and many of us lead stressful, busy lives indoors, peering at screens for hours every day. In my experience it seems that the more disconnected from nature we become, the more discontented and anxious we are. I believe that for our mental and physical health it is important to find the time to regain our roots and become more grounded and connected with the natural world.

Into the trees

There is no better place to do this than outdoors and especially in woodlands or close to trees. Being near something green and growing appears to have a profound impact on our physical and mental health. It is claimed that benefits include a positive impact on our nervous system and brain function: it is mood enhancing, leads to increased energy, helps to reduce anxiety, stress and depression, lowers blood pressure, boosts our memory, productivity and ability to connect with other people. There is also evidence that breathing in the smells from trees may help to combat cancer and viruses. The slow, deep breathing encouraged by fresh air helps to calm us and can also help regulate levels of serotonin to promote feelings of well-being. This feel-good factor also comes from the

ground as harmless bacteria found in soil are a natural anti-depressant. If being closer to nature can do all this, just think what time spent drawing real live trees can do for your creativity! I have always been a secret tree hugger and spend as much time as possible in woodlands. If you live in a town,

I gathered pieces of fallen lichen to create a simple ink to supplement my other materials. I also used the lichen to create marks within the media, being extremely careful not to take too much as certain lichens can take many years to grow only 1mm
