TATE BRITAIN
Millbank ☎
Born in 1935, Paula Rego is one of the most influential figurative artists working today and has revolutionised the way in which women are represented. This major exhibition at London’s
Tate Britain tells the story of her remarkable life through more than 100 works – including collage, paintings, large-scale pastels, drawings and etchings from the 1950s to the 2000s. Beginning with a series of rarely seen early works, including Interrogation, painted when Rego was 15, we can already see her denouncement of injustices and the politics of the day. Later works reveal the start of her interest in folk tales, which has become an enduring theme in her work. Her experiences as a woman, wife and lover, storytelling, depression and therapy as well as abortion, women’s trafficking and the treatment of women in today’s society are all included in this exhibition, inviting visitors into Rego’s world. A limited-edition artwork and signed exhibition book accompany the exhibition.
Paula Rego continues at Tate Britain until October 24. For more information or to book tickets go to www.tate.org.uk
