MIXING WARM AND COOL GREYS ON THE PALETTE

-

The top row of mixes have been made with varying proportions of burnt sienna and ultramarine, moving from pure burnt sienna on the left to ultramarine on the right. White was added to the row of mixes beneath, with more being added to the lowest row.

As we now observe the mixes on the palette, they move from warm on the left to cool on the right. The top row will provide our darkest values, the second row our mid-tones and the lowest gives our range of lights.

All the mixing has so far been made with a palette knife, with the smallest addition of Sansodor being added to make each pool of paint a little more workable. As you begin to mix the darker tones of the top row, make sure that you are mixing enough paint, as a proportion of each of these mixes will later be used in the making of the resulting rows beneath.

As in the previous articles, the underlying drawing will be made directly on to the surface of the canvas using a brush with dilute paint. A small amount of the mix from the centre of the top row is diluted to something that is similar to an ink wash for this purpose.
