With the underdrawing in place, the largest areas of tone were the first to be patched in. As we begin to think about the lights and darks in this study, we also need to begin to think about the temperature of these tones and whether they lean more towards being warm or cool. The background tone was patched in before attention was given to the skin mixes, so the initial tones of the head could be judged against it. The background drape behind Adrian, seen in isolation, is a deep but warm blue, but when seen against the warm and luminous colours of his face it appears to be cooler in temperature
