With the darker tone of the background painted, I began to look more closely at the relative values of the head and shoulders. The colours used to patch in these first shapes were taken directly from the mixes that had already been made on the palette. No further mixing had yet been done. The darker, warm tones of the face, which continue up the right side of the forehead, greatly contrast against the cooler half of the face, and the lightest warms were placed on top of the shoulders and chest
