Now that the whole surface had been covered with a layer of paint, further areas of colour were applied more thickly, resulting in the tones appearing brighter and more luminous. The edges of each of these areas continued to correspond with any lines or edges of the major landmarks seen of the head and shoulders.

The eyes, with their direction of gaze, were drawn in greater detail and the richer warms of the face were added. These warms began to show more contrast as the brighter blues of the background drape were quickly suggested
