GENERAL WATERCOLOUR PROCEDURES

-

l Squint at the picture to gauge the relative lights and darks, known as tones/ values. Usually we work from light to dark in overlaying washes. l Mix enough paint to complete a wet-on-wet wash. Do not drop in paint once the shine has left the surface or you will get a muddy mess. l Each paint application must be dry before you add subsequent washes. l Get each stage to the same level of finish before proceeding to the next. l Details and darks come last. l Hard edges and high contrast draw the viewer’s eye; vice versa for soft edges and low contrast.
