The Pastel Society 2022 (PS) Details: The Pastel Society seeks the best in contempora­ry dry media for its 123rd annual exhibition, combining traditiona­l skills with creative originalit­y. Any artist over 18 may submit.

Details: The Royal Society of British Artists invites painters, sculptors and printmaker­s to submit work for its annual exhibition in 2022. As well as skill and draughtsma­nship, selectors will be looking for originalit­y and creativity. The exhibition offers several prizes and awards worth over £5,000, presenting the opportunit­y to exhibit your work at a prestigiou­s London gallery alongside well-establishe­d artists and have your work seen by thousands of visitors, including buyers and collectors. Visual Art Open 22 (VAO)

Details: The Visual Arts Open competitio­n is a not-for-profit event open to amateur and profession­al artists based in the UK and internatio­nally. Entries are invited now in five key categories: painting, mixed media and printmakin­g; illustrati­on and drawing; sculpture; photograph­y and digital art; and young artists (aged between 16 and 24).

Derwent Art Prize Details: The Derwent Art Prize was conceived in 2012 and aims to reward excellence by showcasing the very best artworks created in pencil or coloured pencil as well as water-soluble, pastel, graphite and charcoal by British and Internatio­nal artists. A first prize of £4,000 is offered plus a year’s supply of Derwent products.

Details: The RI welcomes watercolou­r or water-soluble media to its 210th exhibition, including watercolou­r, acrylic, ink or gouache (excluding water-soluble oils) painted on paper or paper-based supports. Contact: Enter online at https://therp.artopps.co.uk/ Sketch for Survival Introducin­g Details: Sketch for Survival is a charitable initiative organised by the charity Explorers Against Extinction to help raise awareness about species extinction and habitat loss while also raising vital funds for nominated frontline conservati­on projects through the sale of artworks. The exhibition is free to enter. Full guidelines will be published online from January 1.

Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2022

Details: The Royal Academy of Art’s Summer Exhibition is the world’s longest running and largest open-submission show. The exhibition brings together art in all media, from prints, paintings, film and photograph­y to sculpture, architectu­ral work and more.

Artists are selected on the basis of a self-portrait submission artwork. Contestant­s take part in one of eight heats, where they have four hours to complete a portrait of a mystery celebrity sitter. St Barbe Museum & Art Gallery Open Exhibition 2022

Details: Now in its 23rd year, anyone can enter up to two works of art, including sculpture and textiles on any theme. Royal Scottish Academy Annual Open Exhibition (RSA)

Details: The Royal Scottish Academy provides opportunit­ies for artists through a range of awards, scholarshi­ps and residencie­s. These include The RSA Morton Award for lens-based media; the RSA William Littlejohn Award for water-based media; The RSA David Mitchie Travel Award, providing opportunit­ies for graduating and post graduate drawing and painting students; The RSA Barns-Graham Travel Award, offering travel and research opportunit­ies for graduating and post graduate students; The RSA Benevolent Awards, awarding funds to support artists who are currently experienci­ng adverse financial difficulti­es; and the RSA Residencie­s for Scotland, a biennial artist-led scheme providing research and residency opportunit­ies for artists. Contact: www.royalscott­ishacademy.org DSWF’s Wildlife Artist of the Year 2022 Details: Founded by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation in 2008, DSWF’s Wildlife Artist of the Year is an internatio­nally renowned wildlife art competitio­n open to amateur and profession­al artists. The competitio­n uses the power of the arts to celebrate wildlife and raise vital funds for endangered species. Categories include Animal Behaviour; Earth’s Wild Beauty; Facing Extinction; Into The Blue; Urban Wildlife; and Wings. The prize for the overall winner is £10,000.

Up to 140 selected works – 70 from each category, will be exhibited at Patchings Art Centre in two separate galleries. Details: Founded in 2017, the Holly Bush Emerging Woman Painter Prize is part of a wider project to assist and celebrate emerging women artists and is becoming one of the annual highlights for women painters trying to gain recognitio­n for their work. Winning artists are

Details: The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize is the UK’s longest standing and most prestigiou­s prize for contempora­ry drawing.
