DEMONSTRATION Hollyhocks
STAGE ONE
Having decided on the size of the artwork I was looking to produce, in this case, 30340cm, I initially sketched the foreground features. Hollyhocks are my main inspiration as they grow freely on this allotment and wave around in the gentle breeze. I chose to pick up three different colours – pink, yellow and green – to add variety to what I intended to be mainly a green backdrop. Remember that with linocut printing you have to reverse the image you are creating when working on the lino. As mentioned in previous articles, I do this with a simple phone app. With this in mind I then sketched out the basic layout of the view through the hollyhocks to the bean sticks on the upper level. Down below is the main allotment with the green houses and the vegetable beds. There is a pathway through to the far end where the allotment disappears into the tree line. I loved the look of the plot being on two levels
