I began working in acrylic paints, making sure I blended the colours to create smooth, soft areas. My palette was essentiall­y a selection of complement­ary colours. I needed to think about how I was going to portray tone and distance. Having decided against a strong contrast of tone, the back third would be quite light and the road and hedges in the front would help to echo this lightness and guide the viewer’s eye around. I began painting the flowing background in very pale pinks, purples and blues. I painted smoothly into these back areas, carefully blending colours and establishi­ng a light colour for the road in the front. I also worked into other areas with a similar range of colours but in darker hues. The acrylic paint and more transparen­t acrylic inks helping to emphasise the texture-gelled areas, creating the contrast I was after
