TIPS ON APPLYING COLOUR
Gouache is rarely used undiluted straight from the tube – a little water is generally required. Too much water, applied in a heavy-handed manner, can result in a muddy appearance, especially when overlaying a previously applied colour. To reduce this, make sure your background layer is completely dry before applying the new colour as lightly as possible. Gouache allows many layers of opaque details and fine lines to be applied to dry backgrounds. The most effective results will be achieved by laying a dark detail/line over a light background, or the reverse.
