ALL WAS NOT QUITE OVER, HOWEVER

A few cold days kept me inside, so I decided to play with the same image in pencil. I love working quietly with pencil in a detailed way. I started with a piece of good-quality paper and one of my favourite blue Staedtler pencils – 3B this time.

Having made a very quick loose map of what went where I started to describe the whole image with line and tone instead of colour. So as to not smudge my work I always work from left to right. I seek the broadest possible range of mark making to describe what I see and still abide by the one to ten tonal range.

 ?? ?? FINISHED DRAWING ▼
Beside the Stream, pencil, 11315in (28338cm). The finished piece is an interesting contrast to the painting. I am considering exploring the image in watercolour and have thought about working from the painting rather than the photograph and notes. It might be a challenging next step!
