Painting Abstract Landscapes
Gareth Edwards and Kate Reeve-Edwards
At last – at long last, you might say – along comes a serious book about abstract painting that goes further than what you might previously have dismissed as the painting-bynumbers school of instruction.
This is not, it should be said, exactly an instructional book. There are no demonstrations, but what you do get are analyses both of subjects and works, predominantly on canvas or board. There is considerable discussion of observation, interpretation and implementation, with examples from Gareth and other selected artists. These provide a wide variety of subjects, lighting, seasons and atmosphere. A further interesting angle is provided by the authorship. Kate is Gareth’s daughter, so the view is both from inside and outside at the same time, with an often deeper understanding and perspective that can come from either rst or third parties. This is a unique book that does its readers as well as its subject full justice.
