This is an exciting part of the painting’s journey, as I have now put down enough colours and tones to see how each part of the painting works with every other part. The sun came out at this point, and a warm golden light flooded the view outside and shone through and onto the jar of water, bringing great energy to the scene. Focusing on the jar, I used a mix of phthalocya­nine blue and ultramarin­e blue with a little cadmium red to deepen and desaturate the mix, then used this to define the darkest parts of the jar, especially where the glass is thick at the bottom and top. I also worked on the dark green stalks and pale blue of the cloth viewed through the water. At this point I realised I had made the jar look heavy and over-worked so I lifted off the excess by carefully laying a piece of kitchen towel over the area and blotting off the surface paint
