LOVE LIFE David Hockney Drawings 1963-1977

-

Love Life at the Holburne Museum in Bath features rarely seen drawings by David Hockney that explore his philosophy to ‘love life’. Hockney painted these words on the final wall of his 2017 rerospective exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, explaining, ‘I love my work. And I think the work has love, actually ... I love life. I write it at the end of letters’.

The exhibition focuses on Hockney’s drawings made in the 1960s and 1970s, featuring still lifes, architectural exteriors and interiors, empty rooms and portraits, including many of his friends, such as W H Auden, Christopher Isherwood, Stephen Spender, Peter Langan, Celia Birtwell and Ossie Clark (left). Museum director and curator of this exhibition, Chris Stephens writes: ‘The exhibition reveals his delight in the world around him and the way he sees deeply and then condenses a given scene in the most concise way, like visual poetry.’ Love Life: David Hockney Drawings 1963-1977 is at The Holburne Museum, Bath, from May 27 to September 18; www.holburne.org
