I gave a lot of consideration to the colour that would best set off the brown tones of the spaniel. I wanted the background to enhance rather than dominate the subject. I like to introduce some variation of depth, so the background is lighter at the top and in the foreground, darker underneath the dog. I softened around the edges by applying a thin line of a darker reddish brown, blending this into the background. This line defined the shape of the dog, and turned the edge away from the viewer’s eye, adding depth of form
