I always paint a neutral warm colour ground onto my canvas panels. The drawing was made with a neutral colour thinned with medium (a mix of 2⁄3 Sansodor and 1⁄3 linseed oil), generally keeping to the rules of the golden section. At this point I might move things around if the set-up is not exactly as I want it
