I next turned my attention to the water. There is always a temptation to overwork this. I find it’s better to completely wipe away areas you don’t like rather than keep trying to rectify them by layering on more pastel. This is possible with an acrylic underpaint­ing. For the edge of the stream I used a mucky manure colour (Sennelier 61) and Rembrandt burnt umber. For the blue areas I used my trusty Unisons, blue/violet 8 and 9, reflecting the colours in the sky

has a BA and MPhil in music from Cambridge University and is a self-taught artist. She is also a part-time civil servant. Sally has exhibited several times with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and was a finalist in Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2020 in which she painted Melanie Sykes, Bernardine Evaristo and Eddie Izzard.
