At this stage I wanted to refine the shading on her face. I needed to find difference­s of tone in large areas and make soft transition­s connecting the shadow with the light. When I shade skin with, for example, violet, I always add that same colour throughout the drawing – in the hair, eyes, lips, eyebrows and background – to unify the image. I used Polychromo­s madder, Polychromo­s violet and Polychromo­s crimson to suggest the tonal difference­s in the shadows. I also worked on the contour of her face in the light, shading with some Polychromo­s madder and Prismacolo­r permanent red to define the cheek
