At this stage I wanted to refine the shading on her face. I needed to find differences of tone in large areas and make soft transitions connecting the shadow with the light. When I shade skin with, for example, violet, I always add that same colour throughout the drawing – in the hair, eyes, lips, eyebrows and background – to unify the image. I used Polychromos madder, Polychromos violet and Polychromos crimson to suggest the tonal differences in the shadows. I also worked on the contour of her face in the light, shading with some Polychromos madder and Prismacolor permanent red to define the cheek
