Using text in collage
Using text, words and numbers in a collage can be very effective in conveying a narrative – I like to include these components wherever appropriate. I regularly skim through magazines and newsprint to find interesting typefaces, descriptive titles, sentences and words. Poetry, music lyrics, foreign alphabets and other such inspiration can also be particularly emotive.
As an alternative to including type from magazines or papers, you can also create your own words and phrases in a word-processing program, while experimenting with the different fonts available. This text can be printed onto any paper you wish, and cut up and used as collage.
