Line and Wash Painting

- Reviewed by Henry Malt

Liz Chaderton Line and wash always seems to be in the doldrums and there have been few books on the subject over many years. Seen perhaps as a bit ‘traditional’, this is a shame as the contrast between sharp outlines and loose colouring can produce images of instant appeal and often hidden subtlety. Welcome therefore as it is, this book is something of an eye-opener. Liz Chaderton’s subjects and executions are far from staid and include portraits, still lifes and even vehicles as well as the more-expected landscapes and buildings. Some of her work doesn’t even look like line and wash, using blended inking to create softer outlines that extend the medium far beyond where it has been in the past.

This is an exciting book that includes plenty of preparatory work and instruction, but never gets bogged down. It proceeds with a pace that aligns perfectly with the enthusiasm Liz generates.
