Create a mixed-media floral collage with Helen Kaminsky

-

In this demonstration I show you various stages of creating a simple but effective mixed-media floral collage, using an assortment of papers to create texture and interest. There are several things to note before you get started. When using tools to stamp paint onto your surface, remove any excess paint beforehand onto a scrap of paper set aside for waste paint, otherwise your stamp will smudge. Similarly, when using a stencil, blot off any excess paint on your applicator first. I like to use cosmetic sponges rather than brushes when applying paint through a stencil, although this is a personal choice. If you do use a brush, make sure it is bone-dry, otherwise bleeding will occur. I prefer to use a cosmetic sponge as the smoothness of the sponge makes it easier to apply the paint, and reduces the risk of any colour bleeding underneath the stencil. A sponge is also easy to reuse – simply cut off the end where the paint has been applied, and you have a fresh sponge.
