What has been BAT’s contribution to Mozambique’s development?

BAT has been in the Mozambican market for over 50 years with a fully integrated manufacturing business. We generate MZN2.1 billion in annual government revenue through taxation. We provide indirect employment opportunities for around 130,000 people. We are excited to be part of Mozambique’s bright future, and we are glad to support the government’s industrialization strategy and its plans to boost agri-industry. We offer exciting career opportunities for young professionals, and we are known as one of the top employers in the market.

How satisfied are you with BAT’s performance in the country?

Despite the challenges in the Mozambican market, BAT has reported impressive growth levels. Our revenue grew by 6.4% in 2019, and we are seeing operating margin improvements of around 3%. This growth has been achieved by cutting operational costs and taking measures to improve efficiency.

What is your projection for the future of the tobacco industry in the region?

We foresee a possible reduction in tobacco consumption in Mozambique, reflecting a general decrease in global nicotine consumption by 2% YoY. That said, we see alternatives and new spaces for growth. One good example is new nicotine delivering devices, such as vapes.
