Work to extend coastal path will take in landmarks from region

Plans for next stretch of tourist route will cross Tyne into Northumberland before extending up to Scotland

-

PLANS have been published for the next stretch of the England Coast Path, which will cross the Tyne and head into Northumberland.

Natural England has outlined its proposals to improve public access along the 69km stretch of coast between South Bents, bordering Sunderland and South Tyneside, to Amble in Northumberland.

If approved, this route will join the existing England Coast Path from North Gare near Hartlepool through County Durham to South Bents, travelling over the rivers Tyne, Blyth and Wansbeck on its way to Amble and the River Coquet.

The new stretch would pass landmarks including Souter and St Mary’s lighthouses, and Tynemouth Priory.

Coastal areas around the Tyne are currently benefiting from investment, with new developments and renovations at Marine Park and Bents Park in South Shields and the Spanish city development in Whitley Bay

Brad Tooze, Natural England Northumbria area manager said “This is another great step forward in shaping the next stage of the English Coastal Path through to Northumberland, where we aim to provide safe and sustainable access through this amazing landscape.

“The input of the landowners has been intrinsic in helping to shape the proposed route, and we look forward to hearing more views from farmers, landowners and local residents over the next eight weeks consultation period.”

John Harrison, cabinet member for housing and transport on North Tyneside Council, said: “I am delighted that Natural England is planning to include North Tyneside’s beautiful coastline in the England Coast Path.

“Our fantastic coastline is busy all year round with people being active and is the perfect place to unwind, while the major regeneration work currently taking place means the future is really exciting.

“Extending the coast path will allow even more people to enjoy what it has to offer.”

Paul Jones, director of local services and housing delivery at Northumberland County Council said: “We have worked closely with Natural England to bring forward this proposed section of the England Coast Path, which will be a welcome addition for Northumberland. It will assist in boosting local economies for the communities it passes through, and allow more visitors to enjoy everything that this beautiful and diverse section of our coastline has to offer.” Moira Smith, lead member for area management and community safety at South Tyneside Council, said: “The England Coast path significantly improves access to the coast with benefits to residents, business and visitors alike.

“We have worked closely with Natural England to help create and improve the coastal access in South Tyneside from South Bents to the Tyne Ferry crossing.

“I’d encourage people to take part in the consultation and have their say on these important proposals for the South Bents to Amble section of the England Coast path.”

People can make representations to Natural England about the report during the eight-week period that has just begun. Owners and occupiers of affected land can make objections about the report on specified grounds, which will be considered by a planning inspector before the Secretary of State makes a final decision.

All representations and objections must be received by Natural England no later than May 19.

The 55km stretch of the England Coast Path from North Gare to South Bents opened in 2014.

If approved, the cross-Tyne stretch to Amble is expected to be ready in early 2018.

Next comes the 104-km stretch from Amble to the Scottish Border, including Holy Island.
