The Mark of true Cup champions!
SCHOOLS FOOTBALL
THE inaugural Newcastle Under11 Girls’ Champions Cup proved a fantastic night of football.
Four teams had qualified from the East and West Leagues and they played in a round-robin tournament.
In the first games of the night St Mark’s enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 victory over St Teresa’s.
St Alban’s threatened to run riot against Our Lady and St Anne’s but St Anne’s goalkeeper pulled off save after save.
Finally, St Alban’s made the breakthrough with just a minute to go to triumph 1-0.
Both the victors from the first games played each other and they could not be separated in a 0-0 draw.
Going into the last games three schools had a chance of being crowned champions.
St Teresa’s struck early to go one up against St Alban’s.
This temporarily put them top as St Mark’s and Our Lady and St Anne’s were drawing.
St Teresa’s grabbed a further two goals to go 3-0 up and it looked as though this was going to be enough as St Mark’s could not score despite piling the pressure on OLSA.
Finally, in the second-last minute, St Mark’s nabbed the allimportant strike and were able to hang on until full time to win 1-0 and take the Cup with seven points from St Teresa’s with six.
St Alban’s finished third with Our Lady and St Anne’s in fourth.
NEWCASTLE’s Under-15 Girls are in action on Thursday when they host the Derwentside, Chester-le Street and Washington Association team.
