Vianney just two good for St Anne’s

SCHOOLS FOOTBALL

-

ST John Vianney defeated Our Lady and St Anne’s 2-0 in the quarter-finals of the Newcastle Catholic Primary Schools’ Knockout Cup.

For once the weather was excellent and this was reflected in the standard of the play.

It was nip and tuck for the first 10 minutes.

Gradually, St John Vianney got on top but they were unable to get past Callum Burke in the OLSA goal who was having an inspired game – denying the hosts at every opportunity.

The pressure finally told when a shot-cum-cross from Kieran Lane was turned in by Charlie Howe.

The first half saw no more goals.

St John Vianney started the second period as they finished the first – on top.

Daniel Todd went close with a shot before Robert Duncan made it two.

This seemed to galvanise OLSA and they slowly got on top but their final ball often let them down.

Finally, Leo Adisa played a great through bell to Wisdom Tando but Daniel Morley was quickly off his line to smother the ball as Tando shot.

Tando had another effort which just cleared the bar.

St John Vianney were relying on breakaways now and Lane got through once more – only to see his drive tipped over by Burke.

As the final whistle sounded St John Vianney progressed to the semi-finals where they will meet either English Martyrs or St Teresa’s.

In the other semi-final St Charles, 3-1 victors against St Alban’s, will face either St Cuthbert’s Kenton or St Bede’s.
