I’m looking no further than the next eight games, says Benitez

RAFA Benitez has insisted that Newcastle United must focus nothing but the “eight-game season” that lies ahead.

Benitez stated clearly that the time for transfer talk can wait, and that while the scouting department are getting on with their work in the background, his players and coaching team can’t look beyond the next few games.

Speaking ahead of the home clash with Wigan Athletic, Benitez said: “We have eight games now, it is a mini league. We must approach one game at a time.

“We have to concentrate on ourselves. We have an opportunity to improve the home record.”

United are looking to end a run of three games without a win when the Latics come to Tyneside, but Benitez was in upbeat mood after the international break.

Benitez said: “No, I have not focused on transfers or next season.

“The scout department is working but we are focusing on Wigan and that is all. They’ve changed manager. They did well in last few games football-wise and they try different systems. But it’s about us.”

Benitez also revealed that Dwight Gayle has trained well with no recurrence of the hamstring injury that has bothered him in recent months.

He said: “He has been really good for us. His injury was a problem but he has 21 goals and he can go back to his form now.”
