Four adults were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle along with the child following the serious incident on the A184 heading into the city yesterday evening.

The bridge was closed to motorists for more than three-and-a-half hours while police cleared the scene and carried out investigations. Queuing northbound traffic stretched back towards the A1 while in Newcastle buses and drivers faced diversions.

“There appears to have been a vehicle that has rolled off and there are several injuries.

“The most serious is a 10-year-old who has head and arm injuries and suspected abdominal injuries.

“There is another adult with head injuries and a second adult with arm injuries.

“There are also two other adults who we describe as walking wounded.”
