Bowling clubs rally in member search
WHY not try bowls? This is the rallying call of a cluster of Gateshead bowling clubs as the 2017outdoor season gets underway.
Frank Smith, a member of Ravensworth Bowling Club, is particularly eager to see new faces come on board and give bowls a go at a time numbers are steadily decreasing.
Historically bowls has conjured an image of an ‘old peoples game’ however, today there is evidence of more and more youngsters taking up the sport.
Chairman of Northumberland and Durham Bowling Association (NDBA), Frank Smith, explained that the aim of the plea is to build on what has been an exceptional indoor campaign, especially on the south side of the Tyne.
“During the winter months the Gateshead Indoor Bowls Centre has shown a huge increase in use and we would love to see that duplicated outdoors,’’ said Smith, who is also a member of Ravensworth Bowling Club.
“With around 20 public bowling clubs in Gateshead , in addition to a number of private clubs, there are plenty of opportunities on the doorstep.
“Saltwell Park has always been a favourite place for bowling enthusiasts but we have clubs scattered throughout the borough including Barley Mow, Birtley, Bleach Green, Crawcrook, Dunston, Heworth, Holly Hill, Pelaw, Ravensworth, Rowlands Gill, Ryton and Whickham so, there is sure to be a club close by.
“Bowls is a healthy, active sport for male, female, old and young and is an ideal opportunity for all the family to exercise and is also great for socialising and meeting new people in a safe environment.
“Most clubs will have equipment for newcomers to try and they will have plenty of experienced players on hand to give guidance on how to play the game, providing hours of pleasure.’’
Anyone interested in having a go can just turn up at any of the clubs mentioned or contact Frank Smith for further information on 4873925 or NDBA secretary Valerie Jennings on 4990894.
