New-look terrace for Bonbar

- by SIMON DUKE

AS it celebrates its third birthday, Bonbar, a favourite haunt with celebrities including the Little Mix girls, has unveiled a new look outdoor terrace.

The Fenkle Street venue quickly established itself as a favourite among both locals and visitors when it first opened its doors in the spring of 2014. And as we all keep everything crossed for plenty of sun and warm temperatures for Easter weekend, it will open its new Birra Moretti terrace in style with an alfresco party on Thursday night.

In contrast to how the terrace used to look, the revamped area has a light and airy continental feel to it with shabby chic furnishings, eye catching planters and of course an outdoor bar.

And Assembly Rooms and Bonbar owner Antony Michaelides says he thinks it’s an extremely important string to their bow.

“We’re not always blessed with plenty of sunshine here in Newcastle so as soon as the cloud breaks people are looking for somewhere they can go for a few outdoor drinks,” he told Chronicle Live.

“I know the council are very keen on the whole cafe culture vibe for the city but, unlike other businesses, we’re lucky that we don’t have to take anything inside at the end of the day; our terrace is here all the time.

“My family are so proud with where we’ve brought both Bonbar and the Assembly Rooms. The place has been in our charge now for 43 years. I can’t quite believe it’s been three years since we opened Bonbar.

“I probably won’t get much time to celebrate but there’s a saying in this industry that we work while others are enjoying themselves. And as long as I see everyone having a good time I’ll be happy!”

To ensure there’ll be plenty of cheer on Thursday night there will be complimentary drinks and canapes for party goers, while an outdoor oven will be cooking up pizzas and there’ll be live music from Leeds duo Tony & the Turtle as well as a funky house DJ set on the terrace.

The festivities get going at 6pm and will kick off a busy weekend for Bonbar with Any Given Sunday sure to be a hot ticket a few days later.
