Aspin wants Heed to end on home high

- By JEFF BOWRON

GATESHEAD manager Neil Aspin wants to end a fluctuating season with back-to-back victories.

The Heed ended a four-game losing run in devastating style in a fourgoal blitz at Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Super strikes from Wes York, Luke Hannant and Jamal Fyfield along with Manny Smith header brought a 4-0 win at Meadow Park.

Having rewarded the hardcore travelling Heed Army with a flurry of goals in the final away game, Aspin wants more of the same on Saturday.

Gateshead, set for an eighth-place finish, bring the curtain down against mid-table Bromley in a 12.15pm kick-off at the International Stadium.

Aspin said: “It’s been a long time coming but today’s performance was certainly a boost for us after the run we’ve been on. We didn’t want the season to tail off completely and we reaffirmed that, on our day, we can be a very tough side to play against.

“Some of the football we played was excellent. We scored some very good goals as well, which was great for the travelling fans to witness.

“As a club we don’t get the best numbers in terms of our following, but what we do have is a loyal band of supporters.

“I thank them for making long journeys all over the country – this victory was for them.”

Gateshead’s average home gate this season is 919 and Aspin is just as keen to send the home faithful away for the summer with a smile on their face.

“After losing our last two matches at the International Stadium against Maidstone and Lincoln, we want to end the season with another win.

“That will put us in good stead for next season and we will be doing all we can to get the three points against Bromley.”

Gateshead made a dream start at Boreham Wood, with two goals in three minutes inside the opening 20 minutes.

York’s was a superb solo effort that would have graced the top levels of the game, such was its creation and execution.

Hannant’s second goal in a Gateshead shirt was also a beauty, a thunderous angled drive into the far corner of the net.

The Heed’s third was more rudimentary, Manny Smith stooping to head home Paddy McLaughlin’s 85th minute corner.

Fellow defender Jamal Fyfield then got in on the act cutting in from the left flank to arrow a shot into the far corner and complete a good afternoon’s work.
