Record-breaking Mariners finish with win and trophy

CHAMPIONS South Shields finished their league campaign with a 3-2 win against Guisboroug­h Town.

Jordan Blinco gave the Mariners a second-minute lead, when his shot found the net, but in the 15th minute, Stephen Roberts equalised when he flicked the ball home.

However, just two minutes later, Barrie Smith regained the lead for Shields after he latched on to a through-ball and fired home.

In the second half, South Shields went 3-1 ahead when Carl Finnigan tapped the ball home from close range and although Louis Goldsack scored with a header and made it 3-2 in the 91st minute, Shields were worthy winners.

Newcastle Benfield won 2-0 at Chester-le-Street and took the lead on 24 minutes when Paul Brayson scored an excellent goal. The visitors doubled their lead on 76 minutes when John Campbell fired in.

Jarrow Roofing BCA won 3-2 at Ashington with goals from Chris Winn and a brace from Michael MacKay, with Dale Pearson and Lee McAndrew replying for Ashington.

Morpeth finished as runners-up with a 4-2 home victory over Marske United, who finished fifth. Ben Sayer, Sean Taylor and Michael Turner gave them a 3-0 lead, but two goals from Danny Earl gave United a chance, but Liam Henderson finished them off.

North Shields defeated Newton Aycliffe by 3-1 to finish in third place. Gareth Bainbridge scored twice, with Lee Mason adding the third. Alan Harrison replied for Aycliffe.

Whitley Bay won 4-1 away at Penrith to end up sixth. After Andy Murray-Jones had given Penrith the lead, Whitley came back with goals from Christophe­r McDonald, Kyle Patton, Alex Kempster and Martyn Coleman.

Bottom club West Allotment Celtic lost 3-0 at home to Dunston UTS, with Ryan Drane, Richard Slaughter and Dan Halliday on the scoresheet.

In Division Two, Heaton Stanningto­n, who finish fourth, drew 1-1 at home to champions Stockton Town. Heaton scored first from the penalty spot through Gary Yates. Stockton equalised through Sonni Coleman in the 55th minute.

Team Northumbri­a finished as runners-up after a 1-0 win at lowly Thornaby, the winner coming through Ben Dibb-Fuller after 75 minutes from the penalty spot.

Whickham claimed sixth place with a comprehens­ive 4-1 away win at Darlington RA, who ended up thirdbotto­m.

Craig Jelley put them in front on 24 minutes and Andy Brown made it 2-0 13 minutes later.

Callum Bennett reduced the deficit, but Jelley scored his second after 64 minutes and Mark Fitzpatric­k completed the scoring four minutes later.

Blyth Town won 5-0 at Hebburn, with goals from Gary Day (2), Malky Morien (2) and Zak Atkinson.
